Sidecar, The Children’s Hour

Inspired by the eponymous song by Charles Ives,
The Children’s Hour is a 75-minute program produced by Sidecar (Anne Hege and myself) featuring art songs and piano pieces by Ives, Hanns Eisler, John Cage, William Walton, and Jim Tenney. Our original audio and visual design, including interactive electronics and sound processing, tape compositions, and video, provides a counterpoint to vintage texts by Edith Sitwell and Henry Longfellow. The Children’s Hour is nostalgic, but it speaks to contemporary childhood, too.

Performed more than a dozen times in the summer and fall of 2007, the flexibility of the production allowed us to perform in traditional and popular venues, with or without sound systems, with or without pianos. We tailored the balance of acoustic and multimedia elements to each location.
